Gepetto is a Fool

The Story

Gepetto is a Fool

We at Poeha think that the story of Pinocchio could easily replace the religious books we have in the world. We think it is much sweeter in telling people about the good and right and is less demanding. Especially for children to understand the key values in growing up. In the sweet story of Carlo Collodi all life’s lessons are captured in a simple hook without much unnecessary rituals (Luther would love it). It is all children need to know to grow up from a naughty child  into an honest person. Gepetto plays a crucial role in that story. He is a naive fool at first nevertheless plays a vital part in the development of Pinocchio. Without him the wooden boy would never develop a kind of guiltiness and would never create an urge to be a better person.

Gepetto and Joseph

There are a lot of similarities between the books Pinnochio and the bible. Both Gepetto and Joseph are a bit naive carpenters who play 2nd violin next to their main characters. Their sons are both born under strange and unlogical circumstances; Gepetto creates his son out of wood, Joseph’s wife gets pregnant without even touching the mother (o my God). A Miracle! Both children grow up, learning the good the bad and the ugly (RIP Ennio), get crucified (one literally, the other eaten by a whale) but both resurrect as a reborn person with a holy spirit that will accompany them throughout eternity. But undoubtedly both Joseph and Gepetto loved their son as if a gift of God.

Gepetto is a Fool?

Gepetto however has a much better worked out character. He knows he cannot force Pinocchio and his role is only to advice him. His love for the little boy is shown by giving him his food and jacket so the marionette can eat and grow up and go to school to be educated. Pinnochio questions various aspects of this path, and especially the educational system (“We don’t need no education”). While Gepetto wants to teach him how to survive in this tough world, Pinnochio wants to enjoy the moment, “to climb trees and take young birds out of their nests”. Collodi makes his hero very down-to-earth. Pinocchio is naughty, tells lies, breaks promises and ends up in disaster after disaster. Mostly because of inexperience.

We Love Gepetto

When Gepetto is eaten by the whale, and lost in the sea, Pinocchio cries and is filled with sorrow and love for the carpenter. He turns out to be goodhearted after all and saves Gepetto. He promises to be a good son in the future. He learned his lesson. As a reward the fairy rewards him by turning him into an ordinary boy! The love of Gepetto has prevailed.
