He dodged furious fans by scaling a jury tower, and at a closed railway crossing he casually carried his bike through a stopped train—and still won. But Henri’s true nemesis wasn’t on a bike. It was Tour de France boss Henri Desgrange. “Too weak to win,” Desgrange sneered. Henri took the Tour in 1923. The following year, he quit mid-race with his brothers, torching Desgrange’s rules and declaring: “We ride on dynamite.”
Henri’s end? As fierce as his life. His new lover shot him dead with the same gun his late wife had used. No one gasped. Henri was brilliance wrapped in chaos—a man who set fires and became a legend.
